How To Deal With Dreading Coming Home For Thanksgiving After Someone Dies

Being away at college in a lot of ways means that you live in a bubble – it’s your friends, your classes and what ever is happeningĀ on Thursday night.

Yes, you grieve. Yes, you miss your loved one. The thing is that you tend to be so distracted at college that it makes it harder to remember.

Then Thanksgiving Break happens and suddenly you’re forced to go home and face what you may have been intentionally ignoring for a while — someone you love deeply won’t be at Thanksgiving. No Thanksgiving text will be sent their way. So, now what do you do?

I can honestly say I do not know. I’m weeks away from facing my first Thanksgiving without my grandmother and I can feel the sadness building up inside me. I’m even scared to ask what we’re doing on Thanksgiving because no matter what we do, she won’t be there.

I’m a few months out of college, so I won’t necessarily be coming home for Thanksgiving break, but I also won’t be seeing the person I used to equate with home. If you feel like it all sucks, you’re right, it does.

You’re not alone in the feeling.
