“Who’s chasing who?” on Chasing Life’s Episode 9

Last night’s episode of Chasing Life broke our hearts in so many ways, but in typical April fashion she pieced us together right when we didn’t think we had any more hope.

Of all the things that happened between April and Leo last night (they’re off…again) and Greer+Brenna (they’re on…for real) and grandma baking pot brownies, the thing that hit closest to home was what Beth told Raquel.

Beth broke down in the bathroom after Leo slurred his speech and the reality of what was happening to April really hit her. Raquel walks in, kind of consoles her and Beth goes on and on about how her best friend has cancer. She then says something along the lines of how now when she sees April’s name on the phone her first reaction isn’t excitement, it’s fear.

She’s afraid April is going to call her to tell her she’s gotten worse. She’s probably also afraid that it may not even be April on the other side of the phone, it may very well be an EMT or April’s family relaying bad news.

I know what it is to live with that worry. There’s a primal, gut reaction that you just can’t fake. In the 3 seconds it takes you to answer your phone, you’ve stopped breathing and your mind can’t stop racing.

In talking with one of the writer’s of Chasing Life, and watching the show all seasons, there’s nothing I appreciate more than its honesty. It never misses a beat when it comes to making you feel less alone. The writers get it, the actors get it, and the creators get it.

It’s going to be hard to watch the Summer finale next week:

Have you been watching Chasing Life all season?
