There has been SO.MUCH.BUZZ. leading up to Fox’s new show – Red Band Society that we didn’t really know what to expect. So, in order to get through what was either going to be an epic or grueling hour TDY decided to live tweet the episode as a double team.
MG + VN took over Twitter last night and what ensued were multiple instances of double tweets, but an overall consensus that we would be back next week. Same time. Same place. Because we are hooked on #RedBandSociety.
If you didn’t get to watch the premiere last night (or a few weeks back when it premiered online) here’s one quote that sums up the essence of the first episode and probably what the entire show will be about:
“Luck isn’t getting what you want, it’s surviving what you don’t want”
All of the kids at the hospital are soldiering through their own personal wars. Leo has cancer. Emma is dealing with an eating disorder. Cara has an enlarged heart and her lifestyle choices have put her at the end of the list for a new one. There’s coma boy who is, as implied, in a a coma. (In my humble opinion he’s also the BEST narrator. So wise.) Dash has cystic fibrosis and also a bad case of teenage boy. The newcomer, Jordi, has cancer in his leg and at the end of the episode is about to get it amputated.
These are their individual stores. Throughout the episode the narrator and all of the characters repeat something that rings true to anyone who has lost someone, if it weren’t for the specific individual life events they probably wouldn’t be friends. (Or as close to friends as you can get with Cara, watch the episode, you’ll get what I’m talking about.)
They may all have different journeys ahead of them. How they cope, how they’re treated and how they react to it all will be uniquely theirs. But where they started? That’s all the same. They all walked through the same doors. The same way we all saw someone we love cease to exist.
BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE STILL AREN’T TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO BE OUR AGE. (Easier said than done, as I’m now learning.)
So with that I leave you with my fave MG tweet from last night.
