Demi Lovato Relates to the Lyrics of “Why” by Rascal Flatts When Remembering Trenton

In an Instagram post that went up this week, Demi Lovato remembered the death anniversary of her friend, Trenton, by sharing a picture of them with the caption referencing the song, “Why” by Rascal Flatts.

The lyrics to Rascal Flatts’ song really resonate with anyone who has lost a loved one, especially anyone who has lost someone to suicide, and asks the unanswered question, why?

Why them? Why now? Why me? Why us? Why this way?

Even though the song is extremely sad and asks questions that will only ever have hypothetical answers, the verses speak to the way you want to be able to remember someone who died – as the best version of themselves.

You always played with passion
No matter what the game
When you took the stage
You’d shine just like the sun

And because why is probably the most used word after someone dies, the song inevitably touches on the theme of “is there anything else I could have possibly done?” The guilt and regret you feel after someone dies can be overwhelming, even if deep down you know there was nothing else that could be done.

Oh why, that’s what I keep asking
Was there anything I could’ve
Said or done

Demi’s friend Trenton has been gone for 9 years now and she’s still obviously asking herself these questions and remembering him in a bittersweet way. To paraphrase NatyBaby’s interview, time doesn’t heal all wounds, but you do learn to deal with it better as time passes.
