Red Band Society was all over the place last night. Part of the Red Band Society was suddenly being led by Hunter (played by Daren Kagasoff who you may also remember from the Secret Life of the American Teenager) and that led to absolutely nothing good.
From what we can see so far, Hunter has come to Ocean Park Hospital to bring in a HUGE dose of realism that borders on pessimism. I get that he’s frustrated by everything he’s dealing with, but it’s not fair to try and bring everyone else down. Kara said it to him best:
“Maybe we all do die alone, but that doesn’t mean we need to live alone.”
For once since Red Band Society started, everyone was all #TeamKara because she completely got it right with that line. Hunter raises a lot of good points — not everything in a hospital is about posters on the wall or red band societies, some things are scary/painful/life changing. Many things are things you can only go through alone, but this in no way means that you can’t find comfort in being surrounded by love or in knowing that once you walk back through that door people you love will be waiting on the other side.
Plus, we’re not loving Hunter too much right now because he took Dash, Kara and Jordi on an adventure through the hospital that partially led to Dash getting more sick. It’s only partially Hunter’s fault because the fact that Nurse Jackson was suspended was also a HUGE factor. (Spoiler alert: she’s no longer suspended, Hot Doc figured out just how important having her around is.)
Now on to the other best quote of the night:
“What do you do when someone tells you your greatest fear might actually come true?”
Things between Lemma started off so cute. Leo established from the beginning of the episode that he and Emma were now an “us” and even thought to introduce her to some of his old friends who paid him a visit. But after the beginning of the episode, everything went downhill for Lemma. First, Leo, his friends, and Emma went to a restaurant to eat. Even though Leo knows Emma isn’t comfortable around food.
Scene by scene you can see how anxious and upset Emma becomes. It doesn’t help that Leo’s friend (who is a girl) gives a monologue about how someone who’s smart shouldn’t be allowing herself to go through such a slow form of suicide. Obviously this girl has not read Demi Lovato’s tweets or really read anything that has to do with having an eating disorder. (If you’re interested in reliving just how misinformed and insensitive Leo’s friend was to Emma, here’s the clip.)
Things between Lemma are going to get worse before they get better. Especially after Leo’s friend tells Emma that unless she gets over her disease (fast) she’ll lose Leo.
To recap where Red Band Society now stands: Emma can’t be herself around Leo. Things with Kara and Hunter are just weird. Dash is sedated and recuperating. Jordi apologized to Leo, but things are still off. Oh, and, Coma Boy is no longer in a coma…so there’s that.
Here’s to next week’s episode being as eventful.
