If you’ve been following along with The Newsroom for the last few years, you’ll know that last night was the last episode of the entire series.
Charlie Skinner, fearless leader and Don Quixote aficionado, passed away from a heart attack in the second to last episode. The last episode revolved around his funeral, burial and the service that followed.
In some flashbacks between Charlie Skinner and Will McAvoy, news anchor and Charlie’s best friend/almost son, they’re both discussing whether Will has ever thought of having kids. Will mentions that he has but that this point in his life he’s over 50 and considers how long he’ll have to live before he dies and doesn’t want to do that to his kid. Then Charlie says this:
“There’s no age at which it’s okay to have your father die.”
The math can be done and the odds may seemingly be in your favor, but you never know when you or someone you love is actually going to die. Once it happens, no matter your age, you still feel like they were too young to die and you are way too young to be going through this.
It’s never a good age to lose anyone you love. What I loved about last night’s episode of Newsroom is that for as much time as they focused on Charlie’s death, they focused the same amount of time on celebrating his life and legacy.
During the funeral there were exchanges by his friends that had the tone of “well, Charlie would definitely like that we’re talking about this at his funeral” or they were openly missing him and saying so.
In a flashback Charlie talks about a song he’s listening to because his grandson plays it in a garage band. He explains how the Memphis in “That’s How I Got To Memphis” stands in for any place where you currently are and how life got you there.
