“Guilt, otherwise known as nature’s caffeine.”

Red Band Society came back from its winter hiatus at a new time and with a whole lot of changes. For one, almost everyone in this episode is guilty of something and feeling the effects of this guilt. The entire episode can be recapped in one word: roller-coaster.

Here are the recaps by couples:

Leo + Kara — they hooked up and are living to regret it. Overall though, they’re still friends.

Leo + Emma — Emma is back to the hospital after a very brief stint back home. Her doctors are telling her that she may have done more damage to her body than she previously thought. In this moment, when she’s completely down and defeated the only person Emma wants by her side is Leo. The bad part here is that the only person she wants by her side is Leo.

Dash shines a spotlight on why Emma wanting Leo by her side is a bad idea when he says that Leo brings out the worse in Emma. Emma spends so much time focusing on Leo that she refuses to acknowledge that she has to focus on herself. Leo takes Dash’s words to heart and breaks things off for good with Emma.

Kara + Hunter — Hunter literally signed some papers and gave Kara his heart. Kara…Kara has a hard time accepting that someone would love her so completely, even when she wasn’t the nicest person to them. The lesson here, if there is any, is that you’re lucky if you find someone who loves you faults and all. (Major spoiler alert….Hunter wakes up enough in ICU to smile at Kara, but then while in surgery his heart goes flat.)

Jordi — Jordi has no love interest in this episode to battle with. He is battling with himself though. It’s present Jordi vs 5 years in the future Jordi, and the Jordi with the good heart and preference for honesty wins. Unfortunately, this realization comes too late for Jordi and he doesn’t get emancipated. His grandmother does make it to Ocean Park hospital though, so all in all its a win.

The Red Band Society as a whole had a really bad day in this episode. Emma is back, and potentially worse. Kara found love and then lost him. Leo is sold on the idea of going home, only to be told that the cancer is back.

It’s two steps forward and one step back at Ocean Park.
