Remembering Selena, Twenty Years After Her Death

Even though many may immediately think of Selena Gomez when the name Selena is mentioned, for me the name takes me back to a different Selena.

Selena Quintanilla is someone I grew up listening to. She reminds me of summer vacations, Sundays spent with family and moments surrounded by my mom and grandma.

Because she’s sewn into the fabric of my childhood I find it hard to believe that today is her 20th death anniversary. I’m only 22 and I feel like she played such a huge role in all the memorable moments I had growing up. I’m almost 100% sure the lyrics to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” were the first lyrics to any song that I ever learned.

To add to the sadness of today, I felt a slight nudge when Despierta America, Univision’s morning show, was on. The last time I watched that show was with my grandma over a year ago. I’ve seen it on the TV since then, but have never actually watched it. Today I did because they were talking about Selena, but it made me miss my grandma even more.

It reminded me of all the times that my grandma and I spent mornings together, or all the times we talked about celebrities like Selena.

Selena’s family is choosing to honor her life during this time with the hashtag #SelenaLives.

I’m a believer that a person never really dies so long as someone is still around to share their story and memories. So, today, it’s like Selena is alive in all of us.
